Concept and discovery

The crypt is the fruit of an unexpected discovery. During major redevelopment work in the city center, important remains were unearthed, testifying to Nice's fortified power between the Middle Ages and the early XVIIIᵉ century.

Visitors discover emblematic elements: bastion and aqueduct from the XVIᵉ century, Pairolière gate and tower, structures linked to the drawbridge, as well as older traces from Late Antiquity. The site also preserves the trenches dug by French troops during the first siege of Nice ordered by Louis XIV in the late XVIIᵉ century.

This underground route allows you to explore the hidden face of the city, revealing a Nice that was once one of the largest fortified cities in Europe.
