Nature and memory off Cannes

Largest of the Lérins islands, Sainte-Marguerite invites you to escape between pine forests, creeks and heritage. Its trails (nearly twenty kilometers long) lead to the Etang salé du Batéguier, A bird sanctuary where you can observe rare fauna in the heart of unspoilt Mediterranean vegetation.

Concept and history

At the top of the cliff stands the Royal fort, This powerful structure has undergone several modifications since the XVIIᵉ century. Occupied in turn by the French and Spanish (1635-1637), it became state prison from 1685. We visit the cell of the enigmatic Man in the Iron Mask and the Huguenot memorial, a reminder of the life imprisonment of Protestant figures.
Visit Museum of the Sea completes the discovery: its collections come from underwater archaeology excavations in the 1970s (Roman and Saracen wrecks), offering a maritime reading of Cannes' history.
