A major pilgrimage site on the outskirts of Nice
Nicknamed the «Little Lourdes of Nice», the Sanctuary of Notre Dame de Laghet is a major spiritual site on the Côte d'Azur. For over 350 years, it has attracted pilgrims and visitors in search of contemplation, history and beauty. Situated on the heights of La Trinité, it retains an atmosphere that is at once pious and patrimonial, in a setting marked by Marian fervor.
The history of the sanctuary dates back to 1652, when a series of miraculous cures were attributed to the Virgin Mary in the chapel in the hamlet of Laghet. Such was the fervor that a statue was carried in procession from Èze on June 24 of the same year, at the instigation of the priest Don Jacques Fighiera.
In response to this popular enthusiasm, a church was quickly built and inaugurated in 1653. Today, it still houses the original statue of the Virgin Mary, painted in rowan wood by Nice artist Jean Rocca. The sanctuary is also notable for its impressive collection of over 4,000 ex-votos, testimonies of thanks, visible in the Don Jacques Fighiera room, the cloister and the crypt.
A lively place, the sanctuary continues to be animated by the presence of the Benedictine Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Montmartre, who continue to welcome pilgrims and watch over this listed heritage site.
