A medieval village in the heart of a modern city
Perched on a hill overlooking Cagnes-sur-Mer, Haut de Cagnes is the historic heart of the commune. With its steep alleyways, ancient facades and picturesque atmosphere, this medieval village is as attractive to visitors as it is to residents, who find it a unique place to live.
The origins of the site date back to antiquity, when the Ligurians settled on this strategic promontory. Later, a fortified village was built here, giving rise to the area now known as the “artists” village".
Its narrow, often flower-filled streets reveal tightly-packed houses with weathered walls, arched stone doors and traces of the old fortifications. Dominating the ensemble, the Château Grimaldi, the proud guardian of the village, embodies this medieval memory and is one of the Côte d'Azur's most emblematic monuments.
As early as the XXᵉ century, many painters and creators were charmed by the village, drawn by the light and authentic character of the surroundings. Even today, the artistic spirit remains present, reinforcing the cultural charm of the site.
While Haut de Cagnes retains its popular residential vocation, it also attracts new residents, often from Northern Europe, attracted by the cachet of the finest residences and their dominant location. This blend of authenticity and prestige has made Haut de Cagnes one of the most remarkable villages on the Riviera.
