A fascinating dive into the ancient Roman city of Cemenelum
Located in the heights of Nice, in the heart of the Cimiez district, the Nice-Cimiez Archaeology Museum retraces the history of ancient Cemenelum, the Roman capital of the Alpes-Maritimes. Through its collections and its open-air archaeological site, the museum offers a unique immersion in the daily life of the Romans on the Côte d'Azur. Monumental thermal baths, ancient arenas, mosaics, everyday objects... A captivating tour that links remains to history.
Created at the end of the 19th century, the museum has grown with the excavations carried out on site, uncovering one of the most important ancient sites in south-eastern France. Backing onto the ruins of Cemenelum, it offers a dialogue between indoor collections and outdoor remains, in a peaceful neighborhood steeped in history.
Managed by the City of Nice, the museum exhibits over 2,000 pieces - mosaics, ceramics, sculptures, funerary steles, coins - all from the Nice area. Each object illustrates an aspect of Roman daily life: domestic life, commerce, religion, craftsmanship, entertainment... A true lesson in open-air archaeology.
Among the treasures to be discovered, visitors can admire :
- The Roman thermal baths, with their pools, heated rooms and hydraulic systems
- Cemenelum's ancient amphitheatre, a venue for public performances and gatherings
- Finely preserved mosaics with geometric or plant motifs
- Ceramics and kitchenware used nearly 2,000 years ago
- Jewelry, oil lamps, toys and handicraft tools
- Stelae engraved with the names, trades and origins of the inhabitants
The permanent exhibition is regularly supplemented by temporary exhibits, guided tours and educational events for all ages, making the site a living bridge between past and present.
