Terra Amata Museum of Prehistory in Nice

A unique immersion in prehistory

Created in 1976 on the very site of the archaeological discovery, the museum was built to preserve and present the remains of one of the oldest prehistoric settlements ever unearthed in Europe. It offers an accessible and fascinating insight into the first human settlements in Nice, well before Roman times.

Under the scientific direction of the City of Nice, the museum tour is organized around an excavation site preserved in situ, the living heart of the museum, and a collection of authentic objects found on site. Flint tools, animal bones, the remains of fireplaces... each discovery testifies to the ingenuity and adaptation of early man to a coastal environment.

Among the treasures on display, visitors can admire :
- A full-scale reconstructed hut, based on archaeological data
- Fossilized prehistoric hearths, among the oldest known in the world
- Stone-cut tools: bifaces, scrapers, splinters
- Bones of hunted animals: elephants, rhinos, deer...
- An interactive presentation of archaeological excavation methods
- Models, videos and digital devices for all ages

Conceived as a place of transmission, the museum also offers educational workshops, temporary exhibitions and family events, to help visitors better understand man's place in his environment since the earliest times.
