A haven of peace steeped in history, in the heart of the hills of Nice
Nestled in the heights of Nice, in the peaceful Cimiez district, the Cimiez Monastery and its franciscan museum offer a unique journey through the city's religious, artistic and cultural history. With its medieval cloister, Baroque church, hanging gardens and sacred works of art, the visit offers a haven of calm and contemplation, just a stone's throw from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Occupied by Franciscan friars since the 13th century, the monastery is one of Nice's oldest religious establishments. Listed as a historic monument, it houses a late-Gothic church adorned with major altarpieces by Louis Bréa, as well as a peaceful cloister with Romanesque arcades.
Inside the franciscan museum, Housed in the former cells of the monastery, the exhibition retraces the life of the friars and the history of the order in Nice, through paintings, liturgical objects, manuscripts and reconstructions. All in a sober and moving atmosphere, faithful to the Franciscan spirit.
Among the elements to be discovered, visitors can admire :
- The 15th-century cloister and its Mediterranean garden
- Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption church with altarpieces by Louis Bréa
- Frescoes, religious vestments, sacred objects and ancient manuscripts
- A reconstruction of a 19th-century Franciscan cell
- An exhibition on the daily life of monks at Cimiez
- And a spectacular panoramic view of Nice and the sea from the gardens
A place of meditation and culture, the Monastère de Cimiez regularly hosts concerts, temporary exhibitions and spiritual and artistic events in an exceptional heritage setting.
