A spiritual setting off the Croisette
On Île Saint Honorat, the smallest of the Lérins islands, the’Lérins Abbey offers a unique blend of spirituality, heritage and Mediterranean nature. For over sixteen centuries, this unspoiled site has been home to a Cistercian monastic community, perpetuating a tradition of prayer, work and hospitality.
Founded between 400 and 410 by Saint Honorat, the abbey had a troubled history, marked by successive abandonments, pillaging and rebuilding. The present-day congregation, established in 1869 on the initiative of Dom Barnouin, revives the rule of Saint Benedict, centered on work, humility and obedience.
Today, some twenty monks cultivate vines and olive trees, producing renowned wines, liqueurs and oils, available from the monastery store. Visitors can attend religious services, discover the neo-Romanesque church built in the XIXᵉ century, tour parts of the abbey and explore the seven chapels scattered along pine-lined paths and coves. On the south coast, a spectacular fortified monastery, built between the XIIᵉ and XIVᵉ centuries with its feet in the water, bears witness to the defensive role the island may have played.
