Matisse chapel in Vence

A spiritual masterpiece by Henri Matisse

Located on the route de Saint-Jeannet, away from the town center, the Chapelle du Rosaire de Vence, better known as Matisse chapel, is one of the Côte d'Azur's most emblematic cultural and spiritual sites. Conceived, designed and decorated by the painter Henri Matisse for the Dominican sisters, it represents the ultimate masterpiece of the artist, who devoted four years of his life to it.

Concept and artwork

Sober in appearance, with its white walls, blue-and-white tiled roof and tall 13-meter wrought-iron cross, the chapel is distinguished above all by the richness of its interior. Matisse thought out every detail: stained glass windows in luminous shades of blue, green and yellow, ceramic frescoes evoking Saint Dominique, the Nativity and the Way of the Cross, furniture designed by the artist.

An adjoining room, inaugurated in 1951, presents preparatory works, drawings, models and engravings, providing an insight into Matisse's creative process. For Matisse, this chapel was his true artistic testament: a total work of art where spirituality, light and simplicity come together.
