Saint-Nicolas Russian Cathedral in Nice

An Orthodox jewel in the heart of the Côte d'Azur

Inaugurated in 1912, the Saint-Nicolas Russian Cathedral, Nice, often referred to simply as «the Russian church», is one of the city's most visited monuments. With its colorful domes and typically Orthodox architectural style, it illustrates the close historical ties between Nice and the Russian community, attracted by the mild winter weather of the Baie des Anges in the XIXᵉ century.

Concept and history

Built at the request of Empress Maria Fedorovna, wife of Alexander III, the cathedral pays homage to Tsarevich Nicholas Alexandrovich, who died in Nice in 1865. The first church building was erected in 1859, but the growth of the Russian population led to the construction of this majestic cathedral a few decades later.

With its colorful bulbs, interior frescoes and rich liturgical furnishings, it is the largest Russian Orthodox church in Western Europe. Listed as a historic monument, it remains a spiritual landmark, as well as a living testimony to the cultural exchanges between imperial Russia and the French Riviera.
