A Baroque masterpiece in the heart of the Roya Valley
Perched on the edge of the Nice region, the Saorge Monastery is one of the last great examples of Baroque monastic architecture in the Alpes-Maritimes. Founded in 1633 by the Franciscan Recollects and completed in 1662, it offers a fascinating insight into the spiritual and self-sufficient life of the monks who lived there for several centuries.
Classified as a Historic Monument and restored in the XXᵉ century, the monastery has retained much of its original features. Its painted decorations from the XVIIᵉ and XVIIIᵉ centuries, frescoes and period woodwork bear witness to an exceptional heritage. The Notre-Dame des Miracles church, cloister, altarpieces and sundials make up a unique ensemble where art and spirituality come together.
The Way of the Cross painted in 1726 by Piedmontese artist Pietro Botta is one of the oldest still visible in the Nice region. State-owned since 1967, the site has not welcomed monks since 1988, but has opened up to another form of retreat: it now houses a writers' residence, offering a setting conducive to both creation and contemplation.
