A journey through civilizations, arts and time
Overlooking the Bay of Cannes from the heights of Le Suquet, the Museum of World Explorations (formerly the Musée de la Castre) invites you to a cultural and artistic world tour, from Mediterranean antiquity to the frontiers of Asia, Oceania and the Americas. Housed in the former château of the Lérins monks, this emblematic museum offers a unique experience where archaeology, sacred art, ethnography and breathtaking landscapes meet.
Classified as a historic monument, the museum site is a treasure trove in itself: medieval tower, Romanesque cloister, 12th-century chapel... all witnesses to Cannes' past, rehabilitated to house collections from every continent.
The museum presents a rich and eclectic collection Mediterranean antiques, traditional musical instruments from all over the world, primitive arts, Himalayan sculptures, oriental ceramics... all rare pieces gathered by passionate explorers, collectors and scholars.
Among the treasures to be discovered, visitors can admire :
- Egyptian, Greek and Roman artefacts from local excavations
- Ritual masks from Africa, Papua New Guinea and the Americas
- A unique collection of world musical instruments
- Orientalist paintings and 19th-century landscapes of Cannes
- Temporary exhibitions dedicated to distant arts or contemporary issues
- A exceptional panoramic view from the museum tower, embracing the entire bay of Cannes to the Lérins islands
More than a museum, it's a place for awakening, dialogue and curiosity, at the crossroads between arts, civilizations and perspectives.
