A Nice institution where socca is enjoyed in its most authentic form, around a wood-fired oven and in a popular atmosphere.
Located at 13 rue Bavastro, a stone's throw from the port of Nice, Chez Pipo is an emblematic address that has been tantalizing the taste buds of Nice locals since the 1920s. This small, family-run establishment specializes in socca, the emblematic chickpea flour galette, cooked over a wood fire and served piping hot, in a spirit of tradition and simplicity.
At Pipo's, socca is the star. It's thin, golden, slightly crispy on the edges and soft in the center, simply seasoned with pepper. Other typical specialties include pissaladière, pan bagnat, beignets de fleurs de zucchini, farcis niçois and salade niçoise. All served generously, with fresh produce and homemade recipes faithful to the local culinary heritage.
You can order at the counter, then sit down in the dining room or on the terrace, as long as you take a drink. Service is fast, sometimes a little direct, but always efficient. The wait can be a little long at peak times, but that's part of the charm of the place. Prices are affordable, and the atmosphere is relaxed and unpretentious.
The setting is simple and typical, with large wooden tables, no-frills decor and the mouth-watering smell of socca wafting through the air. The atmosphere is friendly, sometimes noisy, but always cheerful. It's a place where people pass through and meet, where locals and tourists come together to enjoy an emblematic dish.
