Opened in 1963, during the artist's lifetime, the museum was designed with the participation of Matisse and those close to him. Today, it houses one of the world's most important collections of his work, enriched by numerous donations. Located a stone's throw from the Cimiez monastery, in the district where the artist lived for almost 40 years, the museum offers an insight into Matisse's creative process and his attachment to the light of the South.

With over 600 works and documents, the museum offers a complete overview of Matisse's artistic development, from his early academic work to the great works of the end of his life. It is also a place for dialogue between the master's work and that of contemporary artists, thanks to regularly organized temporary exhibitions.

Among the treasures on display, visitors can admire :
- Emblematic Fauvist canvases, bursting with color
- Expressive sculptures in bronze and terracotta
- Paper cut-outs like Flowers and fruit or The King's Sadness
- Preparatory drawings and diaries
- Furniture and personal objects belonging to the artist
- Photographs, letters and documents tracing his career

The museum also offers art workshops, lectures, guided tours and temporary exhibitions, to extend your discovery of the Matissian world in a peaceful, inspiring setting.
