Saint-Cézaire cave

On the limestone plateau overlooking the Siagne gorges, in the Grasse hinterland, the Saint-Cézaire Cave is one of the few developed caves in the Alpes-Maritimes. Visitors descend about 40 meters underground to follow, for about forty minutes, a 200-meter path amid formations with pink and purple hues.

Discovered on June 16, 1890, the cave was developed for visitors as early as 1900. The tour does not rely on immense volumes but on a succession of rooms where stalactites, stalagmites, and draperies are closely packed together. The cloth hall is one of the highlights.

The tour is strictly guided. The route goes through the musical stalactites and by a 17-meter fluorescent waterfall, which the official website presents as unique in France.

Underground, the temperature is 15 °C all year round. In the dead of summer, it's a cool getaway when the coast is sweltering: a sweater is enough. In autumn, it's a great idea for a rainy day.

The Domaine de la Grotte is not limited to just the cave. On-site, a discovery trail, a treetop adventure course, and a mountain bike trail allow visitors to extend their outdoor excursion. For a full day in the middle country, you can follow it up with the village of Saint-Cézaire-sur-Siagne, its Notre-Dame de Sardaigne chapel, and its viewpoint over the gorges.

Cave enthusiasts can round out the day with the Baume Obscure, in Saint-Vallier-de-Thiey, another developed cave in the Grasse region. Below, the Siagne gorges are ideal during the warm season for waterside walks, in the shade and far from the crowds of the coast.

From the coast, allow about 15 minutes by car from Grasse, 40 minutes from Cannes, and one hour from Nice, excluding traffic. The cave recommends the route via Peymeinade. Three free parking lots, with a total capacity of 150 spaces, are located on the estate.
